B.Tech | I Year | I-I | R16 | December - 2017

Answer PaperPaper Code: 131AGMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

PART- A

125 marks
a

Write various units of hardness and the relationship between them.

2 marks

Answer

Hardness is expressed in parts per million (ppm), milligrams per liter (mg/L), and degrees Clark (°Cl). The relationship is: 1 ppm = 1 mg/L = 0.07 °Cl.

b

Write short notes on Caustic Embrittlement.

3 marks

Answer

Caustic embrittlement is a form of boiler corrosion caused by the presence of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) in boiler water. NaOH accumulates in crevices and joints, attacking the steel and causing intercrystalline cracking, which makes the metal brittle and prone to failure. It is prevented by adding softening agents like sodium phosphate or sodium sulfate.

c
