Construct a pentagon with a side of 25 mm.

6 marks

Answer

To construct a regular pentagon with a side of 25 mm using the general method:

  1. Draw a horizontal line segment AB = 25 mm.
  2. At point B, construct a perpendicular line and mark a point D such that BD = 25 mm.
  3. Draw the line segment AD. Find the midpoint of AB (let it be M) and the midpoint of the perpendicular BD (let it be N).
  4. Draw a perpendicular bisector at AB and another at AD; the intersection of these bisectors is the center O of the pentagon.
  5. With O as the center and OA as the radius, draw a circle.
  6. Starting from A, mark off arcs of 25 mm length along the circumference to locate the remaining vertices C, D, and E.
  7. Join the vertices to complete the pentagon.
b

A ball thrown up in the air reaches a maximum height of 45 meters and travels a horizontal distance of 75 meters. Trace the path of the ball, assuming it to be parabolic.

9 marks

Answer

To trace the parabolic path of the ball with a maximum height (H) of 45 m and a horizontal range (R) of 75 m, use the rectangular method:

  1. Draw a rectangle ABCD where the base AB = 75 m (horizontal range) and the height AD = 45 m (maximum height).
  2. Mark the midpoint of the top side CD as V (the vertex of the parabola).
  3. Divide the vertical side AD and the horizontal distance from the vertex to the side (half of AB) into the same number of equal parts (e.g., 4 or 6 parts). Label them 1, 2, 3... on AD and 1', 2', 3'... on the horizontal line from V.
  4. Connect the vertex V to points 1, 2, 3 on the vertical line AD.
  5. Draw vertical lines upwards from points 1', 2', 3' on the base line.
  6. The intersection of the line from V to point 1 with the vertical line from 1' gives the first point on the parabola. Repeat this for all points.
  7. Connect these points with a smooth French curve to trace the parabolic path.

The front view of a line makes an angle of 30° with xy. The HT of the line is 45 mm in front of the V.P while its VT is 30 mm below the HP. One end of the line is 10 mm above the H.P and the other end is 100 mm in front of the V.P. Draw the front and top views of the line. Find into true length and inclinations with H.P. and V.P.
