Find the value of k such that the rank of matrix

[[1, 2, 3, 4], [1, 3, 1, k], [0, 0, 1, k], [0, 0, 1, 1]]

is 3.

7 marks

Answer

Let the given matrix be A. To find the rank, we perform row operations to reduce it to row-echelon form:

[[1, 2, 3, 4], [1, 3, 1, k], [0, 0, 1, k], [0, 0, 1, 1]]

Applying R2 = R2 - R1:

[[1, 2, 3, 4], [0, 1, -2, k-4], [0, 0, 1, k], [0, 0, 1, 1]]

Applying R4 = R4 - R3:

[[1, 2, 3, 4], [0, 1, -2, k-4], [0, 0, 1, k], [0, 0, 0, 1-k]]

For the rank of the matrix to be 3, the number of non-zero rows in the row-echelon form must be 3. This occurs if the last row becomes a zero row. Therefore, we set the pivot element of the fourth row to zero:

1 - k = 0

Solving this gives k = 1.

Find the non-trivial solution of the equations

x + y + z = 0, x + 5y + az = 0, 2x + 3y + z = 0.

8 marks

Answer

The system of equations is homogeneous, represented as AX = 0, where:

A = [[1, 1, 1], [1, 5, a], [2, 3, 1]]

For a non-trivial solution to exist, the determinant of the coefficient matrix must be zero (|A| = 0):

|A| = 1(5 - 3a) - 1(1 - 2a) + 1(3 - 10) = 0
5 - 3a - 1 + 2a - 7 = 0
-a - 3 = 0 => a = -3

Substituting a = -3 into the system:

  • x + y + z = 0
  • x + 5y - 3z = 0
  • 2x + 3y + z = 0
  • Subtracting the first equation from the second: 4y - 4z = 0, which implies y = z. Substituting y = z into the first equation: x + z + z = 0, so x = -2z. Letting z = k, the non-trivial solution is x = -2k, y = k, z = k for any non-zero constant k.
