A circle of 50 mm diameter rolls on and in another fixed circle of radius 80 mm. Draw the hypocycloid for the point P on the rolling circle, which is at the contact point of the rolling and fixed circles.

12 marks

Answer

To draw the hypocycloid where a circle of diameter 50 mm (radius r = 25 mm) rolls inside a fixed circle of radius R = 80 mm:

  1. Calculate the angle subtended by the rolling circle at the center of the fixed circle: θ = (r/R) * 360° = (25/80) * 360° = 112.5°.
  2. Draw the fixed circle with radius 80 mm and divide the sector of 112.5° into 8 equal parts.
  3. Draw the locus of the center of the rolling circle, which is an arc of radius (R - r) = 55 mm.
  4. Divide the rolling circle into 8 equal parts and label them.
  5. For each position of the center on the 55 mm arc, draw an arc with radius r = 25 mm and mark the corresponding points on the hypocycloid path by transferring the divisions from the rolling circle.
  6. Connect these points with a smooth curve to complete the hypocycloid.

Construct a plain scale of R.F=1:50,000 to show kilometers and hectometers and long enough to measure up to 7 kilometers. Measure a distance of 54 hectometers on your scale.

13 marks

Answer

Given R.F. = 1/50,000 and maximum length = 7 km.

  1. Calculate the Length of Scale (L.O.S.): L.O.S. = R.F. * Maximum Length = (1/50,000) * 7 * 100,000 cm = 14 cm.
  2. Draw a line 14 cm long and divide it into 7 equal parts, each representing 1 km.
  3. Subdivide the first division into 10 equal parts, where each part represents 1 hectometer (since 1 km = 10 hm).
  4. To measure 54 hectometers (5.4 km), mark 5 km on the main scale and 4 hectometers on the subdivided part.
  5. Label the scale clearly indicating 0, 1, 2, ..., 6 km on the main scale and 0 to 10 hm on the sub-scale.
