PART A

1a

State and explain Heisenberg uncertainty principle.

2 marks

Answer

The Heisenberg uncertainty principle states that it is fundamentally impossible to simultaneously measure both the exact position (x) and the exact momentum (p) of a quantum particle with absolute precision. The product of the uncertainties in these measurements is always greater than or equal to a constant value.

Δx · Δp ≥ ℏ / 2

Mathematically, Δx represents the uncertainty in position and Δp represents the uncertainty in momentum, where ℏ (h-bar) is the reduced Planck's constant (h / 2π). This principle implies that the more precisely the position of a particle is determined, the less precisely its momentum can be known, and vice versa, reflecting the wave-particle duality inherent in quantum mechanics.

1b

What is the importance of Davisson and Germer experiment?

3 marks

Answer

The Davisson and Germer experiment is of fundamental importance in quantum mechanics because it provided the first direct experimental evidence for the wave nature of matter, as proposed by the de Broglie hypothesis. By demonstrating that electrons undergo diffraction when scattered from a crystalline nickel surface, the experiment confirmed that particles exhibit wave-like properties with a wavelength defined by the relation

λ = h / p
where h is Planck's constant and p is the momentum of the electron. This result bridged the gap between classical particle mechanics and quantum wave mechanics, establishing the validity of wave-particle duality for all matter.
