a

What is triangle law of force?

2 marks

Answer

The triangle law of forces states that if two forces acting at a point are represented in magnitude and direction by the two sides of a triangle taken in order, then their resultant is represented by the third side of the triangle taken in the opposite order.

b

Write the equations of equilibrium of a coplanar system of forces.

3 marks

Answer

For a coplanar system of forces in equilibrium, the following conditions must be satisfied:

ΣFx = 0
ΣFy = 0
ΣMO = 0

where ΣFx and ΣFy are the algebraic sums of the components of all forces along the x and y axes, and ΣMO is the algebraic sum of the moments of all forces about any point O in the plane.
