a

What is Pascal’s law? Explain with one example.

2 marks

Answer

Pascal's law states that the pressure at any point in a static fluid is equal in all directions. An example is the hydraulic jack, where a small force applied to a small piston creates a large lifting force on a larger piston due to the uniform transmission of pressure.

b

If the pressure at appoint below the sea is 137.7 KN/m2 what is the pressure 30m below this point. Specific weight of ocean water is 10.06 KN/m2.

3 marks

Answer

Given initial pressure P1 = 137.7 kN/m², depth h = 30 m, and specific weight w = 10.06 kN/m³. The pressure at the new depth is calculated as:

P2 = P1 + (w × h)
P2 = 137.7 + (10.06 × 30) = 137.7 + 301.8 = 439.5 kN/m²
c
