Answer PaperPaper Code: 114ABMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

PART - A

125 marks
a

Draw the core type transformer and explains its principle of operation.

2 marks

Answer

A core-type transformer consists of a rectangular magnetic core with windings placed on two limbs. It operates on the principle of Faraday's Law of Electromagnetic Induction and Mutual Induction: an alternating current in the primary winding produces a time-varying magnetic flux in the core, which links the secondary winding to induce an EMF.

b

State and explain different type of losses in the transformer.

3 marks

Answer

Transformer losses are primarily divided into two categories: 1) Core (Iron) Losses: Comprising hysteresis and eddy current losses, these occur in the magnetic core and are constant regardless of load. 2) Copper (Ohmic) Losses: These occur due to the resistance of the primary and secondary windings and vary with the square of the load current (I2R).

c
