- Cost and Production Analysis: Evaluating production functions and cost structures to minimize costs and maximize output efficiency.
- Pricing Decisions and Policies: Determining optimal pricing strategies under different market structures like perfect competition, monopoly, or oligopoly.
- Profit Management: Analyzing profit trends, break-even points, and risk management to ensure long-term sustainability.
- Capital Management: Assessing investment projects and allocating scarce capital resources to the most profitable ventures.
What is demand? What are its determinants?
Answer
Demand is defined as the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to purchase at various prices during a specific period of time. It is not merely a desire, but a desire backed by the ability and willingness to pay.
The determinants of demand include:
- Price of the Commodity: According to the law of demand, there is an inverse relationship between price and quantity demanded.
- Income of the Consumer: For normal goods, demand increases as income rises; for inferior goods, demand decreases.
- Prices of Related Goods: Demand is influenced by the prices of substitutes (e.g., tea and coffee) and complements (e.g., car and petrol).
- Tastes and Preferences: Changes in fashion, habits, and consumer preferences significantly shift demand.
- Consumer Expectations: If consumers expect prices to rise in the future, current demand typically increases.
- Population and Market Size: A larger number of consumers generally leads to higher aggregate demand.
