Part A
What is an Op-Amp?
Answer
An Operational Amplifier (Op-Amp) is a high-gain, direct-coupled electronic voltage amplifier with a differential input and, usually, a single-ended output. It is designed to perform mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, integration, and differentiation, and is widely used as a fundamental building block in analog circuit design.
What are the limitations of ideal differentiator?
Answer
The ideal differentiator circuit, which uses an op-amp with a capacitor in the input path, suffers from the following primary limitations:
- Instability and Noise Amplification: The gain of an ideal differentiator increases linearly with frequency. Consequently, it amplifies high-frequency noise significantly, which can lead to output saturation and circuit instability.
- Input Impedance: The input impedance of an ideal differentiator is inversely proportional to frequency (Zin = 1 / (2πfC)). At high frequencies, the input impedance becomes very low, which can load the preceding stage and cause signal distortion.
- Phase Shift: In practical applications, the op-amp's open-loop gain decreases at higher frequencies, causing the ideal 90-degree phase lead to deviate, which degrades the accuracy of the differentiation process.
