a

Explain DBMS applications and Database design.

7 marks

Answer

DBMS applications span across various industries where large volumes of data require efficient management, security, and concurrent access. Key applications include: banking for transaction processing and account management; airlines for flight reservations and scheduling; universities for student records and course registration; e-commerce for inventory management and order tracking; and healthcare for managing patient records and medical history.

Database design is the process of producing a detailed data model of a database. It involves two main phases: conceptual design and logical design. Conceptual design focuses on identifying entities, attributes, and relationships using models like the Entity-Relationship (ER) model, independent of any specific DBMS software. Logical design maps this conceptual model into a specific data model, such as the relational model, defining tables, primary keys, foreign keys, and normalization to reduce redundancy and ensure data integrity.

b

Define DBMS. Explain the various Database languages with examples.

8 marks

Answer

A Database Management System (DBMS) is a software suite designed to define, create, maintain, and control access to a database, providing an interface between users and the stored data.

Database languages are categorized based on their functionality:

  • Data Definition Language (DDL): Used to define the database schema. Examples include CREATE (to create tables), ALTER (to modify structure), and DROP (to delete tables).
  • Data Manipulation Language (DML): Used for accessing and manipulating data. Examples include SELECT (to retrieve data), INSERT (to add new records), UPDATE (to modify existing data), and DELETE (to remove records).
  • Data Control Language (DCL): Used to control access to data within the database. Examples include GRANT (to provide user privileges) and REVOKE (to withdraw privileges).
  • Transaction Control Language (TCL): Used to manage transactions. Examples include COMMIT (to save changes permanently) and ROLLBACK (to undo changes in case of an error).
