a

What are the advantages and disadvantages due to higher electric loadings.

7 marks

Answer

Higher electric loading, defined as the number of ampere-conductors per unit length of the armature periphery, significantly influences machine performance. The advantages include: 1) Reduction in the size and weight of the machine for a given output, leading to a more compact design. 2) Improved material utilization, which can lower the overall cost of active materials like copper and iron. 3) Higher efficiency in specific applications due to reduced magnetic circuit dimensions.

The disadvantages include: 1) Increased copper losses, which lead to higher temperature rise and potential insulation degradation. 2) Higher leakage reactance, which negatively affects the voltage regulation of the machine. 3) Greater difficulty in heat dissipation, necessitating more complex or expensive cooling systems. 4) Increased magnetic flux density requirements in the teeth to accommodate the higher ampere-turns, which may lead to higher iron losses and saturation issues.

b

Explain the conducting Materials used in machines.

8 marks

Answer

Conducting materials are essential for carrying current in electrical machines, with copper and aluminum being the primary choices. The selection depends on conductivity, mechanical strength, cost, and ease of fabrication.

  1. Copper: It is the most widely used material due to its high electrical conductivity and excellent ductility. It is available in various forms such as round wires, rectangular strips, and hollow conductors for cooling. It is preferred for high-performance machines where space is limited.
  2. Aluminum: It is significantly lighter and cheaper than copper. Although its conductivity is approximately 60% that of copper, it is often used in large machines or where weight reduction is critical. It requires larger cross-sectional areas to achieve the same current-carrying capacity, which may increase the slot size.
  3. Special Alloys: Materials like phosphor bronze or brass are used for specific components like slip rings or damper windings where mechanical strength and wear resistance are more important than pure conductivity.
  4. Insulation considerations: Conducting materials are always used in conjunction with insulating materials (enamels, paper, or glass fibers) to prevent short circuits, and the choice of conductor must account for the thermal class of the insulation system.

Determine approximate overall dimensions for a 200 kVA, 6600/440 V, 50 Hz, 3-phase core type transformer. The following data may be assumed: emf per turn = 8V, maximum flux density = 1.2 Wb/m2, current density = 2.4 A/mm2, window space factor = 0.2, overall height = overall width, stacking factor = 0.8. Use a 3 stepped core.

For a 3 stepped core:

Width of largest stamping = 0.8 d
Net iron area = 0.5 d2

where d is the diameter of circumscribing circle.

A 90 kW, 500 V, 50 Hz, 3-phase, 8 pole induction motor has a star connected stator winding accommodated in 63 slots with 6 conductors per slot. If the slip ring voltage on open circuit is to be about 400 V, find a suitable rotor winding, stating (a) number of slots, (b) number of conductor per slot, (c) coil span, (d) slip ring voltage on open circuit (e) approximate full load current per phase in rotor. Assume efficiency = 0.9, power factor = 0.856.
