JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech III FUNDAMENTALS OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING Previous Question Paper (November/December - 2018 - R16)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.
Part A
Why work is called high grade energy and heat is called a low-grade energy?
Answer
Work is considered high-grade energy because it can be completely converted into other forms of energy, such as heat, without any theoretical limitations. Heat is considered low-grade energy because its conversion into work is restricted by the second law of thermodynamics, which dictates that it cannot be fully converted into work in a cycle.
What are the limitations of first law of thermodynamics?
Answer
- It does not specify the direction of energy transfer or the feasibility of a process.
- It does not provide information regarding the quality of energy or the limitations on converting heat into work.
- It does not account for the entropy change or the irreversibility associated with real-world processes.

Part B
A stationary mass of gas is compressed without friction from an initial state of 0.3m3 and 0.105 MPa to a final state of 0.15m3 and 0.105 MPa, the pressure remaining constant during the process. There is a transfer of 37.6 kJ of heat from the gas during the process. How much does the internal energy of the gas change?
