Part A

1.a

What are the practical difficulties associated with the integrator circuit?

2 marks

Answer

The primary practical difficulty with a basic op-amp integrator is the offset voltage at the input, which is amplified by the gain of the integrator. Over time, this causes the output to drift toward the positive or negative saturation voltage, effectively acting as an open-loop amplifier for DC signals. Additionally, input bias currents flow through the feedback capacitor, causing it to charge continuously and further contributing to output saturation errors.

1.b

Write about zero crossing detector.

3 marks

Answer

A Zero Crossing Detector (ZCD) is an application of an operational amplifier used as a comparator to detect when an input signal crosses the zero voltage level. It converts a sinusoidal input signal into a square wave output.

The circuit operates by connecting the input signal to one terminal of the op-amp (usually the non-inverting terminal) and grounding the other terminal (inverting terminal). When the input voltage is greater than zero, the output switches to the positive saturation voltage (+Vsat). When the input voltage is less than zero, the output switches to the negative saturation voltage (-Vsat).

Vout = +Vsat if Vin > 0
Vout = -Vsat if Vin < 0

This circuit is widely used in applications requiring phase synchronization, frequency measurement, and time-base generation.
