Assess the role of Taylor in the development of management thought.
Answer
Frederick Winslow Taylor, known as the father of Scientific Management, revolutionized management thought by shifting from rule-of-thumb methods to systematic, scientific analysis of work. His primary contributions include:
- Time and Motion Study: He analyzed tasks to eliminate wasteful movements and establish standard times for completion, ensuring maximum efficiency.
- Functional Foremanship: He proposed a specialized supervisory system where workers are overseen by multiple functional foremen rather than a single supervisor, allowing for expert guidance in specific areas.
- Differential Piece-Rate System: He introduced a payment system that rewarded high-performing workers with higher wages, incentivizing productivity.
- Standardization: He emphasized the importance of standardizing tools, equipment, and working conditions to ensure consistency in production.
Taylor's work transformed management into a professional discipline, emphasizing that productivity is a result of scientific planning and the alignment of human effort with mechanical efficiency.
Describe Maslow’s theory of motivation.
Answer
Abraham Maslow proposed the Hierarchy of Needs theory, which suggests that human motivation is driven by a progression of five levels of needs. Once a lower-level need is satisfied, it ceases to be a primary motivator, and the individual moves to the next level:
- Physiological Needs: The basic requirements for survival, such as food, water, shelter, and sleep.
- Safety Needs: The desire for physical security, stability, protection from danger, and financial security.
- Social (Belongingness) Needs: The need for affection, friendship, social interaction, and a sense of belonging to a group.
- Esteem Needs: The desire for self-respect, achievement, status, recognition, and the respect of others.
- Self-Actualization Needs: The highest level, representing the desire to reach one's full potential, personal growth, and self-fulfillment.
In a management context, this theory implies that managers must identify which level of needs their employees are currently seeking to satisfy to effectively motivate them. For example, offering higher pay (physiological/safety) is ineffective if the employee is already seeking recognition (esteem) or growth (self-actualization).
