Deduce an expression for voltage regulation of a short transmission line, giving the phasor diagram.

7 marks

Answer

For a short transmission line, the series impedance is Z = R + jX. The sending end voltage Vs is given by Vs = Vr + I(R + jX), where Vr is the receiving end voltage and I is the load current. Assuming Vr as the reference phasor Vr = Vr∠0°, and current I = I(cosφ - jsinφ) for a lagging power factor, the sending end voltage magnitude is approximately Vs ≈ Vr + IRcosφ + IXsinφ. Voltage regulation is defined as the change in receiving end voltage from no-load to full-load, expressed as a percentage of full-load voltage:

% Regulation = ((|Vs| - |Vr|) / |Vr|) × 100

The phasor diagram shows Vr on the horizontal axis, with the IR drop in phase with current I and the IX drop leading current I by 90°.

A 3-phase, 50Hz, 150km line has a resistance, inductive reactance and capacitive shunt admittance of 0.1 ohm, 0.5 ohm and 3 x 10-6 mhos per km per phase. If the line delivers 50MW at 110kV and 0.8 p.f. lagging, determine the sending end voltage and current. Assume a Nominal-π circuit for the line.

Answer

Given: Length l = 150 km, R = 0.1 Ω/km, XL = 0.5 Ω/km, Y = 3 × 10-6 S/km. Total parameters: R = 15 Ω, XL = 75 Ω, Y = j4.5 × 10-4 S. Receiving end phase voltage Vr = 110 × 103 / √3 = 63508.5 V. Load current Ir = 50 × 106 / (√3 × 110 × 103 × 0.8) = 328.04 A. At 0.8 lagging, Ir = 328.04(0.8 - j0.6) = 262.43 - j196.82 A.

For nominal-π circuit: Ic1 = (Vr × Y/2) = 63508.5 × j2.25 × 10-4 = j14.29 A. Load current plus shunt current IL = Ir + Ic1 = 262.43 - j182.53 A. Sending end voltage Vs = Vr + IL(R + jXL) = 63508.5 + (262.43 - j182.53)(15 + j75) = 63508.5 + 3936.45 + j19682.25 - j2737.95 + 13689.75 = 81134.7 + j16944.3 V. Magnitude |Vs| = 82885 V (line-to-line Vs = 143.6 kV). Sending end current Is = IL + Vs(Y/2) = (262.43 - j182.53) + (81134.7 + j16944.3)(j2.25 × 10-4) = 262.43 - j182.53 - 3.81 + j18.25 = 258.62 - j164.28 A. Magnitude |Is| = 306.3 A.
