Answer PaperPaper Code: 115AGMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

PART - A

(25 Marks)

1.a

State the concept of GMR.

2 marks

Answer

Geometric Mean Radius (GMR), also known as self-GMD, is an equivalent radius of a conductor that accounts for the internal magnetic flux linkages. It represents the radius of a hypothetical solid conductor that would have the same internal inductance as the actual conductor. For a solid cylindrical conductor of radius r, the GMR is given by Ds = r e-1/4 ≈ 0.7788r.

1.b

What is the need of double circuit transmission line?

3 marks

Answer

A double circuit transmission line consists of two independent sets of conductors for the same voltage level on the same tower structure. The primary needs for implementing this configuration are:

  • Reliability: It ensures continuity of power supply. If one circuit fails due to a fault or requires maintenance, the other circuit can continue to transmit power, preventing a total blackout.
  • Increased Power Transfer Capability: By providing two parallel paths, the total current-carrying capacity is increased, allowing for higher power transmission over the same right-of-way.
  • Reduced Right-of-Way Requirements: Using a single tower structure to support two circuits significantly reduces the land area required compared to building two separate single-circuit lines, which is crucial in densely populated or restricted areas.
