Part A is compulsory. Part B: Answer any one question from each unit.
Part A
What is state space representation?
Answer
State space representation is a mathematical model of a physical system as a set of input, output, and state variables related by first-order differential equations. It represents a system in the time domain using a vector-matrix form, typically expressed as:
where x is the state vector, u is the input vector, y is the output vector, and A, B, C, and D are the system matrices.
What are natural state variables for electrical and mechanical systems?
Answer
Natural state variables represent the energy-storing elements of a system, as their values determine the future behavior of the system given the inputs. For electrical systems, the natural state variables are inductor currents and capacitor voltages, which correspond to the energy stored in the magnetic and electric fields respectively. For mechanical systems, the natural state variables are displacements and velocities of masses, representing the potential energy stored in springs and the kinetic energy stored in moving masses.
