Explain the procedure for formation of nodal admittance matrix by step by step procedure.

Answer

The Nodal Admittance Matrix (Y-bus) is a fundamental tool in power system analysis, representing the relationship between nodal currents and voltages. The procedure to form this matrix is as follows:

  • Step 1: Convert all given line impedances (Z) into admittances (Y) using the relation:
    Y = 1 / Z
  • Step 2: Identify the number of buses (n) in the system. The Y-bus matrix will be an (n x n) square matrix.
  • Step 3: Determine the Diagonal Elements (Yii): These are the sum of all admittances connected to bus 'i'. This includes the line admittances connected to other buses and any shunt admittances (like capacitors or reactors) connected directly to bus 'i'.
    Yii = Σ Yij (for all j connected to i) + Yshunt,i
  • Step 4: Determine the Off-Diagonal Elements (Yij): These are the negative of the sum of all admittances directly connected between bus 'i' and bus 'j'. If no direct connection exists, Yij = 0.
    Yij = Yji = -yij
  • Step 5: Assemble the matrix: Construct the matrix by placing the calculated diagonal and off-diagonal elements into the n x n structure.

Form the Y-bus for the network shown in figure, including the generator buses 1 and 2 with impedance of 0.1, 0.4 p.u. respectively. All the values are p.u. impedances for the network.

Answer

To form the Y-bus matrix for a system with generator impedances, we treat the generator internal impedance as a branch connected to a reference bus or as a shunt element if the generator is modeled as a voltage source behind an impedance.

Given the generator impedances (Zg1 = j0.1 p.u. and Zg2 = j0.4 p.u.), we first convert these to admittances:

Yg1 = 1 / j0.1 = -j10 p.u.
Yg2 = 1 / j0.4 = -j2.5 p.u.

The diagonal elements of the Y-bus are modified by adding these generator admittances to the respective bus self-admittances:

  • Y11 = (Sum of all admittances connected to bus 1) + Yg1
  • Y22 = (Sum of all admittances connected to bus 2) + Yg2

The off-diagonal elements Yij remain the negative of the admittance of the line connecting bus i and bus j. If the network diagram shows a line with impedance Z12 between bus 1 and 2, then:

Y12 = Y21 = - (1 / Z12)

The final Y-bus matrix is then constructed as:

Ybus = [ Y11 Y12 ]
[ Y21 Y22 ]

Note: Ensure all units are in p.u. and complex arithmetic is performed correctly using the j operator.
