Main
Form Ybus for the power system network by singular transformation:
| Transmission line (From Bus – To Bus) | 5-1 | 5-2 | 1-2 | 2-3 | 1-4 | 3-6 | 4-6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Positive sequence reactance(p.u) | 0.04 | 0.05 | 0.04 | 0.03 | 0.02 | 0.07 | 0.10 |
Answer
The Ybus matrix is formed using the singular transformation method by defining the primitive admittance matrix Yp and the bus incidence matrix A. The primitive admittance matrix is a diagonal matrix where each element y_ii = 1/z_ii represents the admittance of the branch between buses. The bus incidence matrix A (of size b x (n-1), where b is the number of branches and n is the number of buses) is constructed such that for a branch connected between bus i and j, the row has a 1 in column i and a -1 in column j. The Ybus is then calculated as:
This method accounts for all series elements; shunt elements are added directly to the diagonal elements of the resulting matrix.
Obtain Zbus for the 4-bus sample system as tabulated below:
| Line No. | Transmission line (From Bus – To Bus) | Impedance (p.u) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0 – 1 | 0.6 |
| 2 | 0 – 2 | 0.5 |
| 3 | 2 – 3 | 0.5 |
| 4 | 1 – 3 | 0.25 |
Answer
The Zbus matrix is obtained using the Zbus building algorithm, which adds one element at a time to an existing system. The process involves four types of modifications:
- Type 1: Adding a new bus p to the reference bus via impedance z. The matrix size increases by one row and column, adding z at the new diagonal position.
- Type 2: Adding a new bus p to an existing bus q via impedance z. The new row/column is calculated based on existing rows/columns of bus q.
- Type 3: Adding an impedance z between an existing bus p and the reference bus. This is handled by adding a temporary bus and performing Kron reduction.
- Type 4: Adding an impedance z between two existing buses p and q. This also uses a temporary bus and Kron reduction to eliminate the auxiliary row and column.
For a 4-bus system, the process is repeated iteratively until all branches are included, resulting in a 4 x 4 impedance matrix.

Figure below shows the one-line diagram of a simple three-bus power system with generators at buses 1 and 3. The magnitude of the voltage at bus 1 is adjusted to 1.05pu. Voltage magnitude at bus 3 is fixed at 1.04pu with a real power generation of 200MW. A load consisting of 400MW and 250Mvar is taken from bus 2. Line impedances are marked per unit on a 100MVA base, and line charging susceptance is neglected. Obtain the power flow solution at the end of the first iteration by the Newton –Raphson method.
