Answer PaperPaper Code: 136DKMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B.
ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions.
iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1.a

Define the following terms: (i) Co-tree (ii) loop.

2 marks

Answer

(i) A Co-tree is the set of branches of a graph that are not included in a selected tree. It consists of all the links of the graph for a specific tree configuration.

(ii) A loop (or mesh) is a closed path in a graph formed by adding a single link to a tree, creating a unique path between the two nodes connected by that link.

1.b

What is a cut set and what are basic cut sets?

3 marks

Answer

A cut set is a set of branches in a network whose removal disconnects the graph into two separate parts, such that the remaining graph is no longer connected. If the removal of any proper subset of a cut set does not disconnect the graph, it is referred to as a minimal cut set.

A basic cut set (or fundamental cut set) is a specific type of cut set defined relative to a spanning tree of the graph. For a given spanning tree, a basic cut set is formed by selecting exactly one tree branch and the set of links (chords) that, when removed, isolate the two nodes connected by that tree branch. Consequently, for a graph with n nodes, there are n-1 basic cut sets corresponding to the n-1 branches of the spanning tree.
