B.Tech | III | II | R16 | July - 2023

Answer PaperPaper Code: 136DKMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1.a

Define tree and co-tree.

2 marks

Answer

A tree is a connected subgraph of a given graph that contains all the nodes of the original graph but includes no closed loops. A co-tree is the set of all branches of the original graph that are not part of the selected tree; it consists of the links that, when added to the tree, form the complete graph.

1.b

What are the uses for formation YBUS by direct inspection method?

3 marks

Answer

The formation of the YBUS matrix by direct inspection is a computationally efficient method used primarily in power system analysis for the following purposes:

  • Load Flow Studies: It serves as the fundamental mathematical model for iterative power flow algorithms like Gauss-Seidel, where the bus admittance matrix represents the network topology and branch parameters.
  • Short Circuit Analysis: It is used to determine the fault currents and voltages at various buses by inverting the matrix to obtain the ZBUS matrix or by solving the network equations directly for specified fault conditions.
  • System Stability Studies: It provides the necessary network representation to analyze the transient and steady-state stability of the power system by relating bus voltages to injected currents under varying operating conditions.
