Answer PaperPaper Code: 156DHMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B.
ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions.
iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1.a

What are the disadvantages of wind power?

2 marks

Answer

The primary disadvantages of wind power include the intermittency and variability of wind speeds, which make power generation unpredictable and require energy storage or backup systems. Additionally, wind farms can have negative environmental and aesthetic impacts, such as noise pollution, visual disturbance, and potential risks to local bird and bat populations. Furthermore, wind energy sites are often located in remote areas, necessitating significant investment in transmission infrastructure to transport electricity to load centers.

1.b

What is the principle of wind power generation?

3 marks

Answer

The principle of wind power generation is based on the conversion of kinetic energy present in moving air (wind) into mechanical energy and subsequently into electrical energy. When wind strikes the blades of a wind turbine, it exerts an aerodynamic force that creates lift and drag, causing the rotor to rotate. This mechanical rotation is transmitted through a shaft, often connected to a gearbox to increase the rotational speed, which then drives an electrical generator. The generator uses electromagnetic induction to convert the mechanical energy into usable electrical power.

P = 0.5 × ρ × A × v3 × Cp

In this equation, P is the power extracted, ρ is the air density, A is the swept area of the blades, v is the wind velocity, and Cp is the power coefficient representing the efficiency of the turbine.
