Explain the evolution of Management thoughts in detail.
Answer
The evolution of management thought is classified into three primary stages representing the shift from task-oriented efficiency to human-centric and systems-based approaches:
- Classical Theory (Late 19th - Early 20th Century): This phase focused on organizational structure and efficiency. It includes Scientific Management (Frederick Taylor), which emphasized time-motion studies and standardizing work; Administrative Management (Henri Fayol), which introduced the 14 principles of management and the functions of planning, organizing, commanding, coordinating, and controlling; and Bureaucratic Management (Max Weber), which stressed hierarchy, formal rules, and impersonal relationships.
- Neo-Classical Theory (1930s - 1950s): Triggered by the Hawthorne Experiments, this movement shifted focus from machines to people. It emphasized the importance of social factors, group dynamics, and informal organizations in influencing productivity. It recognized that employees are motivated by more than just financial incentives.
- Modern Theory (1960s - Present): This approach views the organization as an open system that interacts with its environment. It includes the Systems Approach, which treats the organization as a set of interrelated parts, and the Contingency Approach, which argues that there is no single best way to manage; rather, management style must adapt to the specific situation and environmental variables.
What are the skills required at various level of management?
Answer
Management skills are categorized into three core competencies, the importance of which varies according to the hierarchical level within an organization:
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in specific methods, processes, or equipment. These are most critical at the Lower Level (Supervisory), where managers directly oversee operational tasks.
- Human (Interpersonal) Skills: The ability to work well with others, motivate, lead, and communicate. These skills are equally essential at all levels of management, as every manager must interact with subordinates, peers, and superiors.
- Conceptual Skills: The ability to see the organization as a whole, understand complex relationships, and engage in strategic planning. These are most critical at the Top Level of management, where leaders must make long-term decisions affecting the entire enterprise.
In summary, while technical skills dominate at the bottom, conceptual skills become the primary requirement as one ascends to the top of the organizational pyramid.
