Part A

1.a

Distinguish in detail about the Pendant holder and batten holder

2 marks

Answer

A pendant holder is designed to be suspended from a ceiling rose using a flexible cord, allowing the lamp to hang at a specific height. It is primarily used for general illumination in rooms where adjustable or low-hanging light sources are required. In contrast, a batten holder is designed to be fixed directly onto a wall or ceiling surface, typically mounted on a wooden block or a conduit box. It provides a rigid, stationary light source and is commonly used for direct lighting in areas where space is limited or where a flush-mounted fitting is preferred.

1.b

What is electric shock? How to protect a person from it?

3 marks

Answer

An electric shock is a physiological reaction that occurs when an electric current passes through a person's body. It happens when the body becomes part of an electrical circuit, causing involuntary muscle contractions, burns, or cardiac arrest depending on the magnitude and duration of the current.

To protect a person from electric shock, the following measures are essential:

  • Use Residual Current Devices (RCDs) or Earth Leakage Circuit Breakers (ELCBs) to detect small leakage currents and disconnect the supply instantly.
  • Ensure all electrical equipment is properly grounded (earthed) to provide a low-resistance path for fault currents.
  • Utilize double insulation or non-conductive enclosures for tools and appliances.
  • Implement safe work practices such as using insulated tools, wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) like rubber gloves and boots, and ensuring equipment is de-energized before maintenance.
