Main
List and explain the various environmental analysis or impacts considered for Electric Hybrid vehicles.
Answer
The environmental impacts of electric and hybrid vehicles (EVs/HEVs) are evaluated through a life-cycle assessment approach, focusing on the following key areas:
- Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions: While EVs produce zero tailpipe emissions, the net impact depends on the carbon intensity of the electricity grid used for charging. HEVs reduce emissions compared to conventional vehicles by optimizing engine operation and utilizing regenerative braking.
- Energy Consumption: This considers the total primary energy required for vehicle operation, including the efficiency of energy conversion from raw fuel or renewable sources to the wheels.
- Battery Life-Cycle Impact: The extraction and processing of raw materials like lithium, cobalt, and nickel for battery manufacturing have significant environmental footprints, including water usage and toxic waste generation.
- End-of-Life Disposal and Recycling: The environmental impact is mitigated by the ability to recycle battery components and vehicle chassis, reducing the need for virgin material extraction and minimizing landfill waste.
- Air Quality Improvements: By eliminating or reducing tailpipe pollutants like nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and particulate matter (PM) in urban areas, EVs/HEVs significantly improve local air quality and public health.
Distinguish between conventional vehicles with respect to Hybrid Electrical vehicles.
Answer
| Feature | Conventional Vehicle | Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) |
|---|---|---|
| Power Source | Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) only | ICE combined with Electric Motor and Battery |
| Energy Storage | Fuel tank only | Fuel tank and high-voltage battery |
| Efficiency | Lower, due to energy loss during idling and braking | Higher, due to regenerative braking and start-stop technology |
| Emissions | High tailpipe emissions | Reduced emissions due to electric-only operation modes |
| Regenerative Braking | Not available; kinetic energy lost as heat | Available; kinetic energy converted to electrical energy |
| Complexity | Lower; simpler mechanical drivetrain | Higher; requires power electronics and control systems |
