Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1.a

What are uniform electric fields?

2 marks

Answer

A uniform electric field is an electric field that has the same magnitude and direction at every point in the region of interest. In such a field, the electric field lines are parallel and equally spaced, and the potential gradient remains constant throughout the space between the electrodes.

This condition is typically achieved in practice using electrodes with specific geometries, such as parallel-plate electrodes with rounded edges (Rogowski profile) to minimize field enhancement at the boundaries.

1.b

Why the temperature classification is not done for gases and liquids?

3 marks

Answer

Temperature classification is primarily applied to solid insulating materials because they undergo irreversible chemical and physical degradation, such as thermal aging, oxidation, and structural breakdown, which are highly dependent on operating temperature. In contrast, gases and liquids are self-restoring or fluid in nature.

Gases and liquids do not have a fixed physical structure that degrades permanently due to heat in the same way as solids. If a gas or liquid breaks down due to an electrical discharge, the medium can often circulate or be replaced, and its dielectric properties are generally recovered once the thermal stress is removed. Furthermore, the dielectric strength of gases and liquids is more significantly influenced by pressure, purity, and contamination levels rather than long-term thermal aging, making a rigid temperature-based classification system impractical and unnecessary for these states of matter.
