Two dice are rolled, find the probability that the sum is:

  • i) equal to 1
  • ii) equal to 4
  • iii) less than 13
8 marks

Answer

When two fair six-sided dice are rolled, the total number of possible outcomes is 6 × 6 = 36. Each outcome is an ordered pair (d1, d2) where d1, d2 ∈ {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}.

  • i) Sum equal to 1: Since the minimum value on each die is 1, the minimum possible sum is 1 + 1 = 2. It is impossible to obtain a sum of 1. Therefore, the number of favorable outcomes is 0. The probability is:
    P(Sum = 1) = 0 / 36 = 0
  • ii) Sum equal to 4: The favorable outcomes are (1, 3), (2, 2), and (3, 1). There are 3 favorable outcomes. The probability is:
    P(Sum = 4) = 3 / 36 = 1 / 12 ≈ 0.0833
  • iii) Sum less than 13: The maximum possible sum of two dice is 6 + 6 = 12. Since every possible sum (ranging from 2 to 12) is less than 13, this is a certain event. The number of favorable outcomes is 36. The probability is:
    P(Sum < 13) = 36 / 36 = 1
b

If P(A) = 7/13, P(B) = 9/13 and P(A∩B) = 4/13, evaluate P(A|B).

7 marks

Answer

To evaluate the conditional probability of event A given that event B has occurred, we use the standard formula for conditional probability:

P(A|B) = P(A ∩ B) / P(B)

Given the values:

  • P(A) = 7/13
  • P(B) = 9/13
  • P(A ∩ B) = 4/13

Substituting these values into the formula:

P(A|B) = (4/13) / (9/13)

Simplifying the fraction:

P(A|B) = 4 / 9 ≈ 0.444

A simple electronic circuit consists of 6 transistors each having a failure rate of 10⁻⁶ f/hr, 4 diodes each having a failure rate of 0.5 × 10⁻⁶ f/hr, 3 capacitors each having a failure rate 0.2 × 10⁻⁶ f/hr, 10 resistors each having a failure rate of 5 × 10⁻⁶ f/hr and 2 switches each having a failure rate of 2 × 10⁻⁶ f/hr. Assuming connectors and wiring are 100% reliable evaluate the equipment failure rate of the system and the probability of the system surviving 1000 hrs, 5000hrs and also 10000 hrs if all components must operate for system success.
