JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B. Tech IV Year UTILIZATION OF ELECTRIC POWER Previous Question Paper (June - 2024 - R16)
Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit.
Part A
Give the examples for Continuous and Intermittent Loads.
Answer
- Continuous Loads: These are loads that operate for long periods at a constant or near-constant level. Examples include water pumps, ventilation fans, and industrial compressors.
- Intermittent Loads: These are loads that operate for short durations followed by rest periods. Examples include crane motors, domestic mixers, and elevators.
What do you mean by Load Equalization?
Answer
Load Equalization is the process of smoothing out the fluctuations in the load demand of an electric drive. In many industrial applications, the load is highly fluctuating (e.g., rolling mills, punching presses). To prevent these fluctuations from being reflected back to the supply system, a flywheel is typically mounted on the motor shaft. During peak load periods, the flywheel releases stored kinetic energy to assist the motor, and during light load periods, it absorbs energy, thereby keeping the motor's power demand relatively constant.

An electric train is to have a braking retardation of 3.2 Kmphps. If the ratio of maximum speed to average speed is 1.3, the time for stops is 26 seconds and acceleration is 0.8 Kmphps, find the schedule speed for a run of 1.5 km. Assume simplified trapezoidal speed time curve.

An electric train while going down an incline of 1 in 100 has the following speed-time curve. (a) Starting from rest a uniform acceleration of 2 kmphps for 25 sec (b) Steady speed for 45 sec (with mechanical breaking), (c) Coasting for 55 sec and (d) Breaking at a rate of 3.5 kmphps. Assume the track resistance as 45 NW per tonne, allowance for rotational inertia 9%, overall efficiency 70%, calculate the specific energy consumption.
