a

120 hours of 6-m/s winds

7 marks

Answer

The energy contained in a wind regime is calculated using the power density formula multiplied by time. The power available in the wind is given by the expression:

P = 0.5 × ρ × A × v3

Given air density at 25°C and 1 atm (ρ) is approximately 1.184 kg/m3, area (A) = 3 m2, velocity (v) = 6 m/s, and time (t) = 120 hours:

P = 0.5 × 1.184 × 3 × 63 = 640.512 W

Total energy (E) = P × t = 640.512 W × 120 h = 76,861.44 Wh or 76.86 kWh.

b

60 hours at 4 m/s plus 60 hours at 8 m/s.

8 marks

Answer

For the second regime, the total energy is the sum of energy from the two distinct wind speed intervals:

1. For 60 hours at 4 m/s:

P1 = 0.5 × 1.184 × 3 × 43 = 189.44 W
E1 = 189.44 W × 60 h = 11,366.4 Wh

2. For 60 hours at 8 m/s:

P2 = 0.5 × 1.184 × 3 × 83 = 1,515.52 W
E2 = 1,515.52 W × 60 h = 90,931.2 Wh

Total energy (E) = E1 + E2 = 11,366.4 Wh + 90,931.2 Wh = 102,297.6 Wh or 102.30 kWh.
