B.Tech | I Year | I-I | R16 | September - 2023

Answer PaperPaper Code: 131AGMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Define hardness of water and explain why do we express hardness in terms of CaCO3 equivalents.

2 marks

Answer

Hardness of water is the property that prevents the formation of lather with soap, caused by the presence of dissolved calcium and magnesium salts. It is expressed in terms of CaCO3 equivalents because its molecular weight is 100, which simplifies calculations, and it is the most insoluble salt that can be easily precipitated in water treatment.

b

What is Caustic embrittlement? Write the causes and disadvantages of Caustic embrittlement.

3 marks

Answer

Caustic embrittlement is a form of corrosion caused by the presence of sodium hydroxide in boiler water, which leads to the formation of brittle cracks in steel, particularly at joints and rivets. It is caused by the leakage of alkaline water into hair-line cracks, where the water evaporates and NaOH concentration increases, attacking the iron to form sodium ferroate. This results in the weakening of boiler metal and potential structural failure.

c

Calculate the emf of concentration cell at 25°C consisting of two Cu electrodes immersed in solution of Cu+2 ions of 0.1M and 0.01M concentrations.
