Answer PaperPaper Code: 131AAMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

PART-A

125 marks
a

Solve the following differential equation x(dy/dx) - y = x2.

2 marks

Answer

The equation is a linear differential equation of the form dy/dx + P(x)y = Q(x). Rewriting it as dy/dx - (1/x)y = x, we identify P(x) = -1/x and Q(x) = x. The integrating factor is IF = e∫(-1/x)dx = e-ln|x| = 1/x. Multiplying by the IF gives d/dx(y/x) = 1. Integrating both sides, y/x = x + C, which yields the solution y = x2 + Cx.

b

Find the complimentary function for the equation (d4y/dx4) + 4y = cos 2x + cos 4x.

3 marks

Answer

The characteristic equation is m4 + 4 = 0. Adding and subtracting 4m2, we get (m2 + 2)2 - 4m2 = 0, which factors as (m2 - 2m + 2)(m2 + 2m + 2) = 0. Solving these quadratic equations gives m = 1 ± i and m = -1 ± i. The complimentary function is yc = ex(C1 cos x + C2 sin x) + e-x(C3 cos x + C4 sin x).

c
