The foci of an ellipse are 120 mm apart and the minor axis is 80 mm long. Determine the length of the minor axis and draw by Oblong method. Draw a curve parallel to the ellipse and 25mm away from it.

15 marks

Answer

Given: Distance between foci (F1F2) = 120 mm, Minor axis (CD) = 80 mm.

To find the major axis (AB): Let the distance from the center to a focus be c = 60 mm and the semi-minor axis be b = 40 mm. In an ellipse, the semi-major axis (a) is given by the relation a2 = b2 + c2. Thus, a = √(402 + 602) = √(1600 + 3600) = √5200 ≈ 72.11 mm. The major axis AB = 2a ≈ 144.22 mm.

  1. Construct a rectangle of size 144.22 mm × 80 mm. Divide the semi-major axis (a) and the semi-minor axis (b) into the same number of equal parts (e.g., 4 parts).
  2. Label the divisions on the horizontal side as 1, 2, 3 and on the vertical side as 1', 2', 3'.
  3. Draw lines from the top end of the minor axis (C) through points 1, 2, 3.
  4. Draw lines from the other end of the minor axis (D) through points 1', 2', 3' to intersect the corresponding lines from C. The intersection points define the curve of the ellipse.
  5. To draw the parallel curve, mark points 25 mm away from the ellipse along the normals at various intervals along the curve and join them with a smooth freehand line.

Construct a diagonal scale to read kilometers, hectometers and decameters and long enough to measure up to 6 kilometers. When a line of length l cm on the map represents a distance of 0.5 kilometers. Calculate the R.F and indicate a distance of 2.45 kilometers on the scale.

15 marks

Answer

To construct the diagonal scale, we first determine the Representative Fraction (R.F) and the Length of Scale (L.O.S). Given that 1 cm on the map represents 0.5 km, we convert units to centimeters: 0.5 km = 50,000 cm. Thus, R.F = 1 / 50,000.

For a maximum length of 6 km, the Length of Scale is calculated as: L.O.S = R.F × Maximum Length = (1 / 50,000) × 600,000 cm = 12 cm.

Construction steps:

  1. Draw a rectangle 12 cm long and 5 cm high. Divide the length into 6 equal parts, each representing 1 km. Label the divisions 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
  2. Divide the first division (0 to 1) into 10 equal parts to represent hectometers (1 km = 10 hm).
  3. Draw vertical lines through these divisions and construct a diagonal scale by dividing the height into 10 equal parts to represent decameters (1 hm = 10 dam).
  4. To indicate 2.45 km, locate 2 on the main scale, move 4 divisions (4 hm) to the right, and move 5 divisions (5 dam) vertically up the diagonal line to mark the required distance.
