JNTU B.Tech I Year ENGINEERING PHYSICS - II Previous Question Paper (May - 2019 - R16)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks.
Part A
Explain dual nature of light.
Answer
The dual nature of light refers to the fact that light exhibits both wave-like and particle-like properties depending on the experimental conditions. Wave nature is demonstrated through phenomena such as interference, diffraction, and polarization, where light behaves as an electromagnetic wave. Conversely, particle nature is demonstrated through phenomena such as the photoelectric effect, Compton scattering, and blackbody radiation, where light behaves as discrete packets of energy called photons, with energy given by the relation:
where h is Planck's constant and ν is the frequency of the light.
Define de-Broglie’s hypothesis.
Answer
De-Broglie’s hypothesis proposes that all matter, including particles like electrons and protons, exhibits wave-like properties in addition to their particle nature. According to this hypothesis, a particle with momentum p is associated with a wave of wavelength λ, known as the de-Broglie wavelength.
In this expression, h represents Planck’s constant, m is the mass of the particle, and v is its velocity. This concept establishes the principle of wave-particle duality for all material objects.
