Explain series and parallel connection of resistors with examples.

7 marks

Answer

In a series connection, resistors are connected end-to-end such that the same current flows through each component. The total equivalent resistance is the algebraic sum of individual resistances:

Req = R1 + R2 + ... + Rn
For example, if two resistors of 5 Ω and 10 Ω are in series, the total resistance is 15 Ω.

In a parallel connection, resistors are connected across the same two nodes, meaning the voltage across each resistor is identical. The reciprocal of the equivalent resistance is the sum of the reciprocals of individual resistances:

1/Req = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + ... + 1/Rn
For two resistors in parallel, this simplifies to
Req = (R1 * R2) / (R1 + R2)
For example, two 10 Ω resistors in parallel result in an equivalent resistance of 5 Ω.

If the following two networks shown in figure 1 are equivalent, find L1, L2 and L3.

Answer

To determine the equivalent inductances for a T-network (star) and a Pi-network (delta) of inductors, we apply the transformation formulas analogous to resistive networks. Assuming the figure represents a transformation between a star network with inductors L1, L2, and L3 and a delta network with inductors LA, LB, and LC:

  • The star-to-delta transformation is given by:
    LA = (L1L2 + L2L3 + L3L1) / L3
  • The delta-to-star transformation is given by:
    L1 = (LA * LC) / (LA + LB + LC)
  • L2 = (LA * LB) / (LA + LB + LC)
  • L3 = (LB * LC) / (LA + LB + LC)

By substituting the given values from the provided figure into these equations, the equivalent values for L1, L2, and L3 are calculated.
