Part A

(25 Marks)

1.a

Write the Manson’s gain formula.

2 marks

Answer

Mason's gain formula is used to determine the transfer function of a linear system represented by a signal flow graph. It is given by the expression:

T(s) = C(s) / R(s) = (1 / Δ) Σ Pk Δk

Where:

  • Pk is the path gain of the k-th forward path.
  • Δ is the determinant of the graph, calculated as 1 - (sum of individual loop gains) + (sum of gain products of all combinations of two non-touching loops) - (sum of gain products of all combinations of three non-touching loops) + ...
  • Δk is the cofactor of the k-th forward path, which is the value of Δ for that part of the graph not touching the k-th forward path.
1.b

What are the basic properties of SFG?

3 marks

Answer

The basic properties of a Signal Flow Graph (SFG) are as follows:

  • An SFG is a graphical representation of a set of linear algebraic equations, where nodes represent system variables and branches represent the gain or transmission between variables.
  • The transmission of a signal along a branch occurs only in the direction indicated by the arrow; thus, an SFG is a directed graph.
  • The value of a variable at a node is the sum of all signals entering that node, where each signal is the product of the incoming branch gain and the value of the node from which the branch originates.
  • An SFG is applicable only to linear time-invariant systems.
