Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

PART - A

1a

Find the sample space for the experiment of tossing a coin twice.

2 marks

Answer

The sample space S for the experiment of tossing a coin twice consists of all possible outcomes, where H represents heads and T represents tails. The sample space is defined as:

S = {HH, HT, TH, TT}
1b

Consider the experiment of throwing a fair die. Let X be the random variable (r.v.) which assigns 1 if the number that appears is even and 0 if the number that appears is odd. What is the range of X?

3 marks

Answer

In the experiment of throwing a fair die, the sample space is S = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}. The random variable X is defined as follows:

  • If the outcome is 2, 4, or 6 (even), X = 1.
  • If the outcome is 1, 3, or 5 (odd), X = 0.

The range of the random variable X is the set of all possible values it can take, which is {0, 1}.
