Answer PaperPaper Code: 136AEMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks.

Part A

125 marks
a

State the importance of Nernst Equation in pH measurement.

2 marks

Answer

The Nernst equation establishes the fundamental relationship between the measured potential difference (electromotive force) of the electrode system and the hydrogen ion activity (pH) of the solution. It allows the conversion of millivolt readings from a glass electrode into a precise pH value, expressed as E = E0 - (2.303RT/nF) log[H+].

b

Describe Chemiluminescence with the help of equations.

3 marks

Answer

Chemiluminescence is the emission of light resulting from a chemical reaction. The reaction produces an electronically excited intermediate which then decays to the ground state by releasing energy as a photon.

A + B → C* + D
C* → C + hν

Here, C* represents the excited state species, and hν represents the emitted light.
