a

Explain intrinsic absorption loss in detail.

6 marks

Answer

Intrinsic absorption is a fundamental loss mechanism in optical fibers caused by the interaction of light with the material structure of the fiber itself, primarily silica glass. It occurs even in a perfectly pure material and represents the theoretical lower limit of attenuation.

The two primary mechanisms are:

  • Ultraviolet Absorption: This occurs due to electronic transitions within the glass molecules. As light travels through the fiber, photons with energies corresponding to the bandgap of the silica are absorbed, exciting electrons from the valence band to the conduction band. This effect is significant at shorter wavelengths, typically below 0.4 µm.
  • Infrared Absorption: This is caused by the interaction of light with the vibrational modes of the chemical bonds in the glass, such as Si-O, Ge-O, or P-O bonds. These molecular vibrations resonate at specific infrared frequencies, leading to strong absorption of light at wavelengths typically above 1.6 µm.

The combination of these two effects creates a 'window' of low attenuation in the near-infrared region, which is why optical communication systems operate primarily between 800 nm and 1600 nm.

Explain the advantages and disadvantages of fiber optics communication in detail.

9 marks

Answer

Fiber optic communication has revolutionized data transmission due to its superior physical and signal properties. The advantages and disadvantages are detailed below.

Advantages:

  • High Bandwidth: Optical fibers offer a much higher information-carrying capacity compared to copper cables, supporting multi-gigabit data rates over long distances.
  • Low Attenuation: Modern silica fibers exhibit extremely low signal loss, allowing for transmission over hundreds of kilometers without the need for intermediate repeaters.
  • Electromagnetic Immunity: Because fibers are made of dielectric (non-conductive) glass, they are completely immune to electromagnetic interference (EMI), radio frequency interference (RFI), and crosstalk.
  • Security: Optical fibers are difficult to tap into without detection, as they do not radiate electromagnetic signals, making them highly secure for sensitive data.
  • Lightweight and Compact: Fiber cables are significantly smaller and lighter than copper cables of equivalent capacity, facilitating easier installation.

Disadvantages:

  • Installation and Maintenance: Fiber optics require specialized equipment and highly skilled technicians for splicing, termination, and testing, which increases initial deployment costs.
  • Fragility: Although protected by buffer coatings, glass fibers are physically more fragile than copper wires and can break if bent beyond a critical radius or subjected to excessive mechanical stress.
  • High Cost of Transceivers: The optoelectronic components required to convert electrical signals to optical signals (lasers/LEDs) and vice versa (photodetectors) add to the overall system cost.
  • Cannot Carry Electrical Power: Unlike copper cables, fiber optics cannot deliver electrical power to remote devices, necessitating separate power infrastructure at the receiver end.
