B.Tech | IV Year | I Semester | R15 | November/December - 2018

Answer PaperPaper Code: 127AKMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Explain the principle of operation of polarographic cell.

2 marks

Answer

A polarographic cell operates on the principle of electrolysis using a dropping mercury electrode (DME) as the indicator electrode and a large pool of mercury or a saturated calomel electrode as the reference electrode. As the applied voltage increases, the current flowing through the cell is measured, resulting in a polarogram where the limiting current is directly proportional to the concentration of the electroactive species in the solution.

b

What are the deviations of Beer’s Law?

3 marks

Answer

Deviations from Beer's Law occur due to: 1) Chemical deviations caused by association, dissociation, or complex formation of the analyte at high concentrations. 2) Instrumental deviations arising from the use of non-monochromatic radiation or stray light. 3) Physical deviations due to high concentrations (typically >0.01 M) where electrostatic interactions between molecules alter their absorptivity.
