Answer any Five Questions. All Questions Carry Equal Marks.
Main
Explain the classification of embedded systems based on different criteria in detail and give an example for each.
Answer
Embedded systems are classified based on performance, functional requirements, and complexity:
- Small-scale embedded systems: Designed for simple tasks, usually 8-bit or 16-bit microcontrollers, with limited hardware and software resources. Example: Electronic toy.
- Medium-scale embedded systems: Use 16-bit or 32-bit microcontrollers or DSPs, involving more complex hardware and software, often requiring an RTOS. Example: Industrial control system.
- Sophisticated embedded systems: High-end hardware like FPGAs, ASICs, or multi-core processors, running complex operating systems. Example: Smartphone.
- Standalone embedded systems: Function independently without a host computer. Example: Digital camera.
- Real-time embedded systems: Strictly time-constrained, divided into Hard Real-Time (failure leads to catastrophe) and Soft Real-Time (minor delays are acceptable). Example: Airbag control system.
- Networked embedded systems: Connected to a network to provide distributed intelligence. Example: Home automation system.
- Mobile embedded systems: Portable devices with limited power and memory. Example: Wearable fitness tracker.
What is the purpose of embedded systems?
Answer
The primary purpose of an embedded system is to perform a specific, dedicated function within a larger mechanical or electrical system. Unlike general-purpose computers, they are optimized for efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
Key purposes include:
- Data Collection and Processing: Gathering sensor data and performing real-time analysis to make automated decisions.
- Control and Automation: Managing hardware components to maintain desired states, such as temperature or speed control.
- Communication: Facilitating data exchange between devices or systems over various protocols.
- Resource Efficiency: Operating within strict constraints of power, memory, and physical size while maintaining high performance.
- Reliability: Providing consistent, predictable performance in harsh or mission-critical environments where human intervention is not feasible.
