Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad B.Tech IV OPTOELECTRONICS AND LASER INSTRUMENTATION Previous Question Paper (November/December - 2018 - R15)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.
PART-A
What are the limitations of optical fibers?
Answer
The primary limitations of optical fibers include high installation and maintenance costs due to the need for specialized equipment and skilled labor. Additionally, they are susceptible to physical damage, such as fiber breakage or bending losses, and require complex signal conversion processes at both the transmitter and receiver ends to interface with electronic systems.
What are conditions to be satisfied to get total internal reflection in optical fibers?
Answer
For total internal reflection to occur in an optical fiber, two fundamental conditions must be satisfied:
- The light must travel from a medium of higher refractive index (the core, n1) to a medium of lower refractive index (the cladding, n2), such that n1 > n2.
- The angle of incidence at the core-cladding interface must be greater than the critical angle (θc) defined by the ratio of the refractive indices.
The critical angle is mathematically expressed as:
