Explain the OSI reference model with a neat diagram.
Answer
The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) reference model is a conceptual framework developed by the ISO to standardize the functions of a telecommunication or computing system into seven distinct layers. Each layer provides specific services to the layer above it and receives services from the layer below it.
The seven layers are:
- Physical Layer: Handles the transmission of raw bit streams over a physical medium. It defines mechanical, electrical, and procedural interfaces.
- Data Link Layer: Responsible for node-to-node data transfer, framing, physical addressing (MAC), and error detection/correction.
- Network Layer: Manages logical addressing (IP), routing, and packet forwarding across different networks.
- Transport Layer: Ensures end-to-end communication, flow control, segmentation, and error recovery (e.g., TCP, UDP).
- Session Layer: Establishes, maintains, and terminates sessions between applications.
- Presentation Layer: Handles data translation, encryption, decryption, and compression to ensure the application layer can read the data.
- Application Layer: Provides network services directly to user applications, such as HTTP, FTP, and SMTP.
Diagrammatic Representation (Conceptual Flow):
The model facilitates interoperability between diverse systems by ensuring that manufacturers follow a common protocol stack, allowing different hardware and software to communicate effectively across a network.
Compare virtual circuits with datagram subnets.
Answer
Virtual circuits and datagram subnets represent two fundamental approaches to packet switching in network layer design. In a virtual circuit network, a logical path is established between the source and destination before any data packets are transmitted. All packets follow this pre-determined route, ensuring packets arrive in order, and resources are reserved along the path. This approach provides reliable, connection-oriented service but requires a setup phase and is vulnerable to link failures along the path.
In contrast, datagram subnets treat each packet as an independent entity. There is no connection setup; each packet is routed dynamically based on current network conditions. This makes the system highly robust to link failures, as packets can be rerouted, but it does not guarantee in-order delivery or resource availability. Datagram subnets are connectionless, offering higher flexibility and fault tolerance at the cost of potential packet reordering and congestion issues.
