JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech IV DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS Previous Question Paper (July/August - 2022 - R18)
Answer any five questions. All questions carry equal marks.
Main
What are the main benefits of using a DBMS to manage data in applications involving extensive access.
Answer
Using a Database Management System (DBMS) provides significant advantages for applications requiring extensive data access:
- Data Independence: Decouples the physical storage structure from the logical application logic, allowing changes to hardware or storage formats without rewriting application code.
- Efficient Data Access: Utilizes sophisticated query optimization and indexing techniques to retrieve and update data rapidly, even in large-scale datasets.
- Data Integrity and Security: Enforces integrity constraints (e.g., primary keys, foreign keys) and access control policies, ensuring data consistency and preventing unauthorized access.
- Concurrent Access: Manages multiple users accessing the database simultaneously through transaction control and locking mechanisms, preventing data conflicts.
- Crash Recovery: Provides backup and recovery procedures, ensuring data remains consistent and durable even in the event of hardware or software failures.
- Reduced Data Redundancy: Centralizes data management to minimize duplication, which saves storage space and prevents inconsistencies across different application modules.
Explain the following in DBMS:
i) Levels of abstraction ii) Data independence.
Answer
i) Levels of Abstraction: A DBMS simplifies user interaction by hiding complex storage details through a three-level architecture:
- Physical Level: Describes how data is actually stored on the storage media (e.g., file structures, indices, compression).
- Logical Level: Describes what data is stored and the relationships among them, defining the database schema without concern for physical implementation.
- View Level: The highest level, where only a portion of the database is visible to specific users, hiding irrelevant details and providing security.
ii) Data Independence: This is the capacity to change the schema at one level without requiring changes to the schema at the next higher level:
- Physical Data Independence: The ability to modify the physical storage schema (e.g., changing from a B-tree to a hash index) without affecting the logical schema or application programs.
- Logical Data Independence: The ability to modify the logical schema (e.g., adding a new field or table) without changing the external views or the application programs that rely on those views.
