B.Tech | II Year | I Semester | R16 | May/June - 2019

Answer PaperPaper Code: 133ANMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Why series motor cannot be started on no-load?

2 marks

Answer

A DC series motor cannot be started on no-load because at no-load, the armature current is very small, which makes the flux produced by the series field winding extremely low. Since speed is inversely proportional to flux, the motor would attempt to reach a dangerously high, theoretically infinite speed, leading to mechanical destruction of the machine.

b

What are Faradays laws of Electro Magnetic Induction?

3 marks

Answer

Faraday's laws of electromagnetic induction are:

  1. Whenever the magnetic flux linked with a circuit changes, an electromotive force (EMF) is induced in it.
  2. The magnitude of the induced EMF is directly proportional to the rate of change of magnetic flux linkage.
c
