Find the transfer function

Vc(s) / V(s)
of the following electrical system (figure 1).

9 marks

Answer

For an electrical circuit consisting of a resistor R and capacitor C in series, the input voltage V(s) is related to the current I(s) and the output voltage Vc(s) across the capacitor.

Applying Kirchhoff's Voltage Law (KVL) in the s-domain:

V(s) = I(s)R + Vc(s)

The voltage across the capacitor is given by:

Vc(s) = I(s) * (1 / Cs)

From this, the current I(s) is:

I(s) = Vc(s) * Cs

Substituting I(s) into the KVL equation:

V(s) = (Vc(s) * Cs * R) + Vc(s)
V(s) = Vc(s) * (RCs + 1)

The transfer function is the ratio of output to input:

Vc(s) / V(s) = 1 / (RCs + 1)
2
