Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

1a

What is the need for encoding the output of quantizer in a PCM system.

2 marks

Answer

The output of a quantizer consists of discrete amplitude levels that are typically represented by decimal values. Encoding is necessary to convert these decimal values into a unique binary sequence (bits), which allows the information to be transmitted or stored using digital hardware. This process ensures efficient representation, facilitates error detection and correction, and enables the use of digital signal processing techniques.

1b

A certain low pass band limited signal x(t) is sampled and the spectrum of sampled version has the first guard band from 1500Hz to 1900Hz. Calculate the sampling frequency? What is the maximum frequency of the signal?

3 marks

Answer

Let the maximum frequency of the signal be fm and the sampling frequency be fs. The spectrum of the sampled signal consists of replicas of the baseband spectrum centered at multiples of fs. The first guard band exists between the upper edge of the baseband spectrum (fm) and the lower edge of the first image (fs - fm).

Given the guard band range is 1500 Hz to 1900 Hz, we have the following equations:

fm = 1500 Hz
fs - fm = 1900 Hz

Substituting fm into the second equation:

fs - 1500 = 1900
fs = 3400 Hz

Therefore, the maximum frequency of the signal is 1500 Hz and the sampling frequency is 3400 Hz.
