Draw the architecture of B-ISDN and explain it.
Answer
The B-ISDN (Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network) architecture is structured into three distinct planes to manage user data, control signaling, and network management. The architecture is defined by the following planes:
- User Plane: Responsible for the transfer of user information, including flow control and recovery functions. It utilizes the ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) layer to handle high-speed data, voice, and video traffic.
- Control Plane: Handles call control and connection control signaling. It manages the establishment, maintenance, and release of connections required for communication sessions.
- Management Plane: Comprises the Layer Management, which manages layer-specific functions like OAM (Operations, Administration, and Maintenance), and the Plane Management, which provides coordination across all planes.
The protocol reference model consists of the Physical Layer (handling bit transmission), the ATM Layer (responsible for cell switching and multiplexing), and the ATM Adaptation Layer (AAL), which maps higher-layer services into 53-byte ATM cells.
What is asynchronous mode in B-ISDN? Explain when it is used.
Answer
Asynchronous mode in B-ISDN refers to Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), a packet-switching technique that organizes data into fixed-size cells of 53 bytes (5 bytes header, 48 bytes payload). Unlike synchronous systems that allocate fixed time slots to specific users, asynchronous mode allocates bandwidth on demand.
It is used in the following scenarios:
- Variable Bit Rate (VBR) Traffic: When applications generate data at irregular intervals, such as compressed video or bursty data traffic, asynchronous mode allows for efficient statistical multiplexing.
- Integrated Services: When a single network must simultaneously support diverse traffic types, including real-time voice (constant bit rate) and non-real-time data, asynchronous mode provides the flexibility to prioritize cells based on Quality of Service (QoS) requirements.
- High-Speed Backbone Networks: It is used when high-speed switching is required across a wide area, as the fixed cell size allows for hardware-based switching, minimizing latency and jitter.
