JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech IV INTERNETWORKING Previous Question Paper (July/August - 2022 - R15)
Answer any five questions. All questions carry equal marks.
Main
Explain the structure of internetworking and internet application services.
Answer
Internetworking is the practice of connecting multiple computer networks together through the use of intermediate devices such as routers and switches, creating a unified system. The structure is hierarchical, typically organized into the Core Layer (high-speed backbone), Distribution Layer (routing and policy enforcement), and Access Layer (end-user connectivity).
Internet application services operate at the Application Layer of the TCP/IP model, providing the interface between network protocols and end-user software. Key services include:
- DNS (Domain Name System): Resolves human-readable hostnames into IP addresses.
- HTTP/HTTPS: Facilitates web browsing and data transfer.
- SMTP/IMAP/POP3: Manages electronic mail transmission and retrieval.
- FTP: Enables reliable file transfers between clients and servers.
- DHCP: Dynamically assigns IP addresses to devices on a network.
Compare sub-netting Vs super-netting.
Answer
| Feature | Sub-netting | Super-netting (CIDR) |
|---|---|---|
| Definition | Dividing a single large network into smaller, manageable sub-networks. | Combining multiple smaller networks into one larger network block. |
| Purpose | Reduces broadcast traffic and improves security/management. | Reduces routing table size and prevents IP address exhaustion. |
| Subnet Mask | Increases the number of bits in the mask (e.g., /24 to /26). | Decreases the number of bits in the mask (e.g., /24 to /22). |
| Network Bits | Borrowed from host portion. | Borrowed from network portion. |
Sub-netting is primarily used by network administrators to organize internal traffic and segment departments, whereas super-netting is used by ISPs and backbone routers to aggregate routes, thereby simplifying the global routing table and conserving address space.
