State and explain the Kirchhoff’s laws with examples.

8 marks

Answer

Kirchhoff’s Current Law (KCL) states that the algebraic sum of currents meeting at any junction or node in an electric circuit is zero. Mathematically, ΣI = 0. This is based on the principle of conservation of charge. For example, if currents I1 and I2 enter a node and I3 and I4 leave it, then I1 + I2 = I3 + I4.

Kirchhoff’s Voltage Law (KVL) states that the algebraic sum of all voltages around any closed loop in a circuit is zero. Mathematically, ΣV = 0. This is based on the principle of conservation of energy. For example, in a series circuit with a voltage source V and resistors R1 and R2, the sum of voltage drops across the resistors equals the source voltage: V = IR1 + IR2.

b

Calculate form factor for the sinusoidal wave form of v = Vm sin ωt.

7 marks

Answer

The form factor is defined as the ratio of the RMS value to the average value of an alternating quantity.

For a sinusoidal waveform v = Vm sin ωt:

RMS Value (Vrms) = Vm / √2 ≈ 0.707 Vm
Average Value (Vavg) = 2Vm / π ≈ 0.637 Vm

The form factor is calculated as:

Form Factor = Vrms / Vavg = (Vm / √2) / (2Vm / π)
Form Factor = π / (2√2) ≈ 1.11

Thus, the form factor for a sinusoidal waveform is 1.11.
